about

This album was created to marry polyphonic sixteenth century choral music with the great lyrical ability of brass instruments:

G. P da Palestrina was an Italian composer who worked in the sixteenth century he was organist of Cathedral of St. Apagito he was known as a very prolific composer and is know to have composed over 300 motets and 100 mass’s amongst other things. He has composed three pieces on the album a mass and two motes. The mass Missa Brevis is considered one of Palestrina’s most Widley performed works and was first published in 1570. All but one of the movements consists of four voices, the Benedictus is a trio which the trombone or bass joins during the hosanna. Exsultate deo and Sicut Cervus are both motets the latter of which is a setting of psalm 42 and is often associated with funeral music.

Hans Leo Hassler also was working around the sixteenth century and moved to Venice having been born in Germany in 1584 Whilst there he became friends with G. Gabrielli. The setting to Dixit Maria is Mary’s response to been told she is to be the Mother of Christ. Dixit Maria is written more in the style of a canzona than a motet, this could be to do with hasslers location in the more secular Venice, it was written for the feast of the Annunction.

T. L De Victoria again a sixteenth century composer based in Italy. Victoria’s style is more homophonic than Palestrina’s in his melodic writing he broke more rules than Palestrina by using dissonance. The works featured in this album are taken from Victoria’s Opera Omnia a collection of sacred motets.

William Byrd was a sixteenth century English composer he was organist and a ‘gentleman of the chapel royal’ for Queen Elizabeth. When first published Byrd’s mass was not printed with a title page or date, this was due to the religious politics of sixteenth century Britain, mass’s were illegally celebrated by Catholics and the mass for 4 voices was probably written for and financed by wealthy Catholics.
